The Flexi Toy Revolution

Print-in-place articulated toys are one of the most popular categories in 3D printing. From flexi cats and dragons to fidget spinners and desk toys — these models print as one piece and move right off the build plate.

But which filament should you use? The answer depends on what you want.

PLA: The Standard Choice

Best for: Most flexi/articulated toys, beginners, reliability

95% of print-in-place toys are designed for PLA. It's stiff enough to hold shape but allows joints to snap free with a gentle flex. Our entire Flexi Toys collection is designed for PLA.

Pros:

  • Easy to print — works on any FDM printer
  • Sharp details — joints break free cleanly
  • No bed adhesion issues
  • Cheap ($15-20/kg)
  • Available everywhere

Cons:

  • Brittle if over-flexed — joints can snap
  • Not truly flexible — it's articulated, not bendy
  • Heat sensitive — warps in hot cars

TPU: The Flexible Option

Best for: Truly bendy toys, phone cases, wearables

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is actually flexible. Think rubber-like. It bends, stretches, and returns to shape.

Pros:

  • Actually flexible and squishy
  • Nearly indestructible — won't snap
  • Great for functional parts (bumpers, grips)

Cons:

  • Hard to print — requires direct drive extruder
  • Stringing issues — lots of post-processing
  • Print-in-place joints often fuse together
  • More expensive ($25-40/kg)
  • Slow print speed required (20-30mm/s)

Head-to-Head Comparison

Print-in-Place Toys: PLA wins. Joints designed for PLA's stiffness break free easily. TPU joints tend to fuse.
Durability: TPU wins. PLA joints break if a kid forces them. TPU bends.
Detail: PLA wins. Sharper features, cleaner bridges.
Ease: PLA wins. Print and done. TPU needs tuning.

What About PETG?

PETG sits between PLA and TPU. Tougher than PLA, stiffer than TPU. It can work for articulated toys but requires wider joint clearances (0.4mm vs 0.3mm for PLA). Not our first recommendation for flexi toys.

Our Recommendation

Use PLA for print-in-place flexi toys. It's what every designer expects, it's easy, and it works. Save TPU for projects that need actual flexibility (phone cases, wheels, bumpers). Check out our articulated toy collection — all optimized for PLA.
